The prestigious European Demographer Award goes to FLUX researcher Julia Hellstrand
FLUX researcher Julia Hellstrand has received the prestigious European Demographer Award. This award recognizes outstanding research that deepens our understanding of the causes and effects of demographic changes in Europe.
Presented since 2015, the award is one of the most significant recognitions in the field of demography. Population Europe awards it in collaboration with its partners, and a committee of leading European researchers selects the recipients. Awards are given in two categories: promising young researchers and experienced researchers.
Hellstrand is a postdoctoral researcher at the Helsinki Institute for Demography & Population Health (University of Helsinki), where she is involved in the FLUX project. She has studied the causes and consequences of low fertility in particular.
“It’s great to see Julia’s research receive the recognition it deserves. She is a highly talented and promising young researcher who has already become one of Europe’s leading fertility researchers early in her career. I am convinced that her research will have a significant impact in the field of demography and beyond,” says Professor Marika Jalovaara, director of the FLUX project.
“At FLUX, we produce up-to-date research data on the causes and consequences of changes in fertility. Julia’s work has made a significant contribution to both scientific and social debates.
Julia Hellstrand says that the recognition means a lot to her.
“This award recognizes my work and encourages me to continue developing and learning. It also shows that my research is meaningful and useful. I would like to thank my dissertation supervisors, colleagues, and co-authors, whose support and cooperation have been crucial to my research progress,” she says.
The other winners this year are Associate Professor Cosmo Strozza (University of Southern Denmark) and Associate Professor Éva Beaujouan (University of Vienna). The awards will be presented on October 27, 2025, at the WissenschaftsForum in Berlin. The event can also be attended remotely.
